List Poem, with Voices

The voice of Amergin of the white-knee
The voice of Mick Jagger
The voice of Halle Berry
The voice of Mary Kay LeTourneau, Heidi Fleiss
The voice of Regis and Kelly, and their guests
The voice of soft closed lids
The voice of a high-rise apartment overlooking Madison Avenue
in the empty dawn
The voice you invoke now
The voice of a cruel blow, of treason
The voice of a locked door, a closet, a madrigal
The voice of a rapist
The voice of a tea-kettle breaking into steam
The voice of your in-box virus-scanning program clicking for a letter,
through spam, clicking…
The voice of a flop
The voice of twin girls in a corner of a bedroom learning to speak
bad French
The voice of a half-hearted confession, of a legacy, of decay
La voix derrière la porte…
The voice of a light ceremony
The voice of vermin in the cellar, scurrying
The voice of little brown jug
The voice of your chair’s legs scraping around in the kitchen, wearing
grooves in the linoleum
The voice of your car outside, turning over and over,
and the sun again

and your body, the real one, stuffed with these and starting
to form opinions
